In addition to those who live there, Independence Park in Vanuatu welcomed airplane loads of visitors from Noumea along with other visitors from surrounding islands to the country’s 38th Independence Anniversary Ceremony on Sunday, July 29. The park is located next to Le Meridien Port Vila Resort.

Noumea is the capital city of New Caledonia and is situated on the ocean. Several bays extend along the city providing magnificent beaches and points of view. Besides its natural features, Noumea also has very attractive cultural offerings for tourists who choose to visit there.

On Sunday, over 4,000 people came together at the park to celebrate as police strategically posted themselves to keep the peace at the event.

Vanuatu Prime Minister Charlot Salwai Tabimasmas opened the event with a welcome speech in which he mentioned the situation on Ambae island which is suffering from the volcanic eruption and subsequent ash fall. He issued thanks to the government for showing its support during this tragic force of nature.

The tiny Vanuatu island of Ambae was fully evacuated 3 days ago for a second time as its volcano erupted again since last September when it was also fully evacuated. The Manaro Voui volcano began spewing ash, and officials ordered all residents to leave immediately, fleeing to neighbor islands.

The PM also talked about the importance of firming up the infrastructure, stating that this would not only create employment and boost the economy, it would also promote the movement of tourists to the islands. The Prime Minister named Korman Sports Facilities, Lapetasi Wharf, Port Vila Urban Road Infrastructure, Bauerfield International Airport, Pekoa International Airport, Whitegrass International Airport and road developments on Tanna and Malekula and submarine cable as classic examples of infrastructure resilience.

He concluded by saying, “We must unite at all times to build a better Vanuatu for future generations – the children of tomorrow.”
